1. this morning, a crew of movers from the art museum rolled a huge crated painting (at least 10' x 6' x 2') through my department and carried it down the library's stairs because the museum's freight elevator was inaccessible. judging by the labels on the crate, the painting (from the 2000 aluminum by design exhibition) had come to us from amsterdam and was on its way to new york city. neato.

2. i am working on drafts of customer service policies. here's a snippet from my obscene phone call policy: 

Unfortunately, obscene phone calls may just as often contain seemingly harmless requests - for instance, Main once had a caller who would ask female librarians to read articles from Vogue magazine. If a male librarian answered, the caller would always hang up. In cases like this, staffers should use their best judgment and act appropriately.

my spy in our processing department was just handed a copy of "indiana jones and the last crusade" on VHS that we ordered in 1999. yep, nine years ago. the last millennium, even.

spy: it's VHS...do you want it?
amy: sure! we paid for it, right? make em work!
spy: yes, you did! expect in three months!

out of my spreadsheet of 269 improperly coded* dvds:

12 - assorted wtf problems that i can't resolve here
86 - billed to customers (never coming back)
36 - found on the shelves
27 - in transit between libraries (never coming back)
87 - long overdue (never coming back)
12 - missing (never coming back)
09 - not in system at all (never coming back)

do a little math, and we can see that 86% of these dvds are never coming back...and this is only those dvds that are improperly coded; we haven't even touched the ones that are properly coded.

*improperly coded: all of our feature films on dvd should have a location code of "xgdv," which translates to "CLP Main (Oakland) Second Floor Film & Audio - DVD" in the online catalog. essentially, the location code tells you (and us) exactly where something is hiding. alas, everything on my list has the wrong location code, which means that even if these dvds hadn't been stolen we still would have a heck of a time finding them for you.

well, i could find them because i am awesome. the music librarians would get lost, though.
